On May 18, our government, across all party lines, announced official support for Bill S-226 – the Sergei Magnitsky legislation.
This Bill will allow for Canada to apply strong sanctions against foreign nationals who commit human rights violations outside our borders.
This Bill was named in honour and memory of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian national who was subjected to gross violations of human rights for daring to speak out against corruption in his home country.
Sergei lost his life because he stood up for what was right and just. Our government cannot and will not allow for atrocities such as this, wherever they occur, to go unchallenged.
I am proud to stand with my colleagues in support of Bill S-226, to honour the memory of Sergei Magnitsky, and to shed a light on human rights abusers around the world.
